On the Beat 1998

On the Beat is a publication aimed at female street sex workers and was written by Steph Wilcox (Magenta) who worked in the Research and Publications department at that time. It was based on research with this client group of women. The images of the women in the booklet caused some controversy, but like all the publications, it was produced both with and for the target audience. That is the way the women we spoke to wanted to be represented, so that is how I drew them. It was not intended to be an accurate representation of how they looked (it's a cartoon after all) but for a group of people engaged in an occupation with such stigma attached to it, portraying them in the way they wanted, as ‘sexy’, ‘glamorous’ stereotypes, was preferable to the stereotypes most people had about street based sex workers.
