The Tart, the Mermaid, the Cockfish
and the Subutex 2007

‘The Tart, the Mermaid, the Cockfish and the Subutex’ employs a metaphor to explain the complex agonist/antagonist actions of Subutex and Suboxone. This story was branded as a ‘Robbers dog’ leaflet (Grade one naughty) and features the man with the biggest anal smuggling capacity in the prison system, ‘Tommy Tardis Arse’. Tommys’ catchphrase was "I can fit a barrel of bitter, right up me shitter!" It was fairly apparent, for obvious reasons, that this idea would not be accepted by the commissioners from the prison service, so I took the cartoons out and produced the ‘straight’ version.

The prison service had bought 100,000 copies of the ‘straight’ version of the Subutex leaflet for every prisoner in the country. However, this version had been the one both the prisoners and drug service prison staff had liked the most. I decided to print it anyway as I felt sure the few copies that got into prison would be passed around by the prisoners.
